Leaving Viana for Oporto


The view from our hotel whilst we were eating breakfast.
Checked out of pur hotel and headed for Barcelos - home of the black chicken that you see on all of the portugese souvenirs. 
We parked on the outskirts of town and walked in. We came across ruins of a castle and a lovely church. The ruins date back to the eleventh century. It is fun trying to imagine the people who may have lived there. 

Mitchell mucking around, trying to scare me and Sabrina. 
They were fixing the flowers for the weekend and had flowers everywhere. We were not allowed to take any photos in the church. 
The town is about to host a large book fair and they have everything decorated as of they were having their religoous feast. 
We visited a museum thaat was hosting an exhibition of chickens locally made.

We had a delightful morning tea of coffee and pastries - thin and short crist , one of the best pastries I have had.

We take off for Porto. We cannot get into our apartment so we hit the main street - lunch, shopping and sightseeing.
Sabrina ordered a hot dog and this is what she got - the sausage was housed in a pancake and served with a spicy sauce. 
Mitch went for pasta. 
I tried the typical lunch in Porto - Francezinha ( a heart attack on a plate - it is a sandwich with sausage, beef cheese and egg with a sauce that tastes like worstershire). 
Girls and boys seperated but eventually ran into one another. We stopped for macroons and a drink. 
We stroll to our apartment- it is lovely. It is very spacious and nicely decorated plus it has a nice courtyard. 


We rest and then get ready for dinner. Food, food and more food.
We head down to the river. We get the funicular down - it saves lots of leg work. 


We look for a restaurant and return to one Ed and I visited last holiday. 
We sit upstairs and enjoy the wonderful view and watch the world go by. 
Mitchell and I decided to eat some sardines, Ed had some fish, Ana chose octopus and Sabrina had roast lamb - it was huge!



We strolled some more before getting the funicular back up the top.
We are all ready to burst from eating too much food so we try to walk some of it off. We walk on top of the bridge you can see in the photos - it was built by Gustav Eiffel.

  3. Your morning and afternoon teas look better than our. With the amount of food eaten maybe you should not take the funicular. Sabrina I like the surprise of not knowing what I am eating. I had the same face in Lyon when I was served a cold rissoles for dinner. Oh well, you must smile. Paul

  4. Sabrina said it tasted better than it looked. She did enjoy it even though it was unusual.
    We are getting that round we probably could roll down the hill.
    The paella has inspired Ed he will be practising perfecting the art of making it - be prepared to be experimented on.
