Lisbon Day 2

Started our day with a quick coffee and bread with chorizo then off to the metro.

We visited the Church of Sao Roche. It is the chapel built in Rome taken apart and shipped to Lisbon in pieces and rebuilt. I was expecting it to be quite small but it was a decent size and very beautifully decorated. They had some fascinating artifacts on display including Mitchell's patron saint Francis Xavier's little toe.

A blurry pic of the chapel dedicated to Saint Fracis Xavier.
An elborate chest that housed a number of important relics associated with Francis Xavier including his little toe (A woman apparently bit it off him whilst alive and used it a piece in a game like chess - it was said she never lost !). The governor of Goa owned the box which was passed down until 2009 and Maria Costa donated to the church.
Detail of the chest.

This box housed the chest.

We happened to be right in the vicinity of a store Sabrina likes from the USA - Brandy Melville. She enjoyed spending some of her Christmas money!
Mitchell and Ed waiting for Brina.

A coffee and cake was needed to keep us going. Mitchell has decided coffee is safer than a milkshake. We all had Bolo de Belem or Bolo de Arroz. Delicious!
The street was filled with lovely little shops but they were too expensive - so window shopping. We hit a commercial area and did a little more shopping and worked up an appetite for lunch. Roasted goat, rice, potatoes, salad and house wine.
We headed down Rua Augusta. Ed went up to the top of the main arch whilst Sabrina bought a handbag.

You cannot see him but Ed is up the top of the arch.

The view from arch of Rua Augusta.

Ed took a pic of me and kids waiting to cross the road.
View from other side of arch. I am a speck to the right of the tour guides holding umbrellas.

We split up from here. Sabrina and I visited the National Tile Museum and Ed and Mitchell hired scooters. The museum was great! I loved the wide variety of old and modern ceramics.
Ed and Mitchell enjoyed a beer and then hired scooters.

Mitchell nearly took out a pigeon whilst riding the scooter.

Mitchell and Ed visited the main cathedral in Lisbon on the way home.

Sabrina outside the Tile Museum.

There is a beautiful church inside the museum.

Brina and I headed home. Had a beverage and then a swim in the pool. We felt refreshed and ready for dinner. Went back into town and back to the Time Out Market. Ed had pork cheeks, Sabrina a curry, Mitchell a pizza and I had suckling pig again! We thoroughly enjoyed our few days in Lisbon.

  1. The street with the trams was rather narrow. I’m not sure about the photo in the blue and white tiles girls; The piazza with the Christmas tree looks massive. The scooters sound good, and Mitch was obviously looking for pigeon pie. Another great day. Enjoy.

  3. I will take a pic of her bag. Streets are very narrow. I dont know how Ed was able to drive through Lisbon, even with GPS it is challenging.
