Coimbra and Fado

It is raining today so we decided to go to Coimbra after lunch. We all got ready and headed south. We checked into the hotel and next headed out for a coffee and a pastry - yum!

Later we dropped Joaquim and Teresa off at a restaurant and the rest of us headed up towards the fado centre. Ana, Edward, Mitchell, Sabrina and I went to hear live fado. The centre is focussed on trying to preserve the fado culture. All of the performers were ex students of Coimbra University and one of the singers is still studying there. They gave us a little of the history of fado in Coimbra and its connections with the students. Traditionally in Coimbra the young males woo the young ladies with romantic serenades. The singers were lovely and both guitarists amazing. It was a moving performance!

We had a lovely evening. We hope to return to Coimbra and enjoy more beautiful music and food.
